Managing The Ego Through Mindfulness

In our most natural state humans are ego-driven and emotional beings. Historically, our egos have been tasked with ensuring our survival by helping us to hunt and avoid being hunted. Egos are the unconscious part of our brains that control our body’s vital functions such as breathing, temperature and balance.

In the past, being ego-driven meant the continuation of our species. Today, if left unchecked, it can lead to the death of our careers. Luckily, we can manage our ego-led emotions by changing our internal wiring through mindfulness. Practicing mindfulness looks like being aware of our emotional triggers, acknowledging our feelings without acting on them and staying in the present moment.

Like any new skill, exercising mindfulness gets easier the more we put it into practice. It's when engaging in challenging conversations, that this skill is truly tested. In order to get the outcome you desire, it is less about negotiating with whomever you are speaking to and more about negotiating with your emotions. Controlling your words and actions in a heated moment prevents self-sabotage and gives you agency over how you would prefer to conduct yourself.
